About Karmayog Seva Mela

The Joy of Giving Week (JGW) is India's "festival of giving"! Launched in Sept 27-Oct 3, 2009, the festival is celebrated every year, in the week including Gandhi Jayanti, i.e., October 2, and brings together Indians from all walks of life, to celebrate "giving".

From auto drivers to CEOs, school children to celebrities, homemakers to opinion leaders, millions of people give their time, money, resources or skills back to society- by creating or participating in "events" of their choice. A giving event could be as simple as a family taking out the maid's children for an ice-cream party, or as large as the Design For Change Contest that had 200,000+ school children across India participating and volunteering to make a difference. Events are organised by individuals, social groups, schools, colleges, NGOs, corporates, media houses and others. 1 million+ people participated in 400+ events across 40+ cities in JGW2010, raising over Rs20crores in money and resources donated, and millions of volunteer hours.

Karmayog Seva Mela is one such event organised at Hyderabad, held for the first time in during the JGW2010, which brings together a large number of NGOs and the public face to face. This will be like any other ‘Mela’ but with a difference wherein the purpose is to connect people with NGOs. NGOs in their stalls may display their activities, have posters, share pamphlets, hold discussions with people, sell their products and play small games to hold peoples' attention and interest. A food court would be an added attraction for everyone. This will be an opportunity for NGOs to showcase thier work and solicit volunteers and services from people and also donations from individuals and corporate representatives who may visit the mela. . This year we wish to make it on a bigger scale accommodating as many as 60 NGOs. Zorastrian Club Management has agreed to provide us the venue for Karmayog Seva Mela on the 7th and 8th of October. Some of the NGOs that were part of last year's Karmayog Seva Mela have committed to join and put up their stalls in the Mela. Like last year we shall have the allotment on a first cum first serve basis with preference to last years 21 participants.
